Prison & Fire Service Authenticity for Film, TV & Media
Grounded, lived-experience consultancy for writers and producers who want their stories to feel real.
Who Are We?
Audiences can tell when a scene feels false. I help you replace generic TV tropes with the gritty, mechanical, and psychological truth of the frontline.
Who Are Wharton Frontline?
Most technical advisors know the rules. I know the reality.I'm not just a consultant; I'm a screenwriter. While I'm still working toward that first professional credit, I understand the delicate balance between "the facts" and "drama." I know that sometimes the truth needs to be bent for a beat - but I also know that if you break the reality too far, you lose the audience.
I spent 14 years within the Prison Service, starting on residential wings and working my way up to Senior Officer and Custodial Manager. As an Orderly Officer, I've held the keys to the entire establishment, responsible for the safety and security of hundreds of staff and thousands of prisoners.
My experience isn't just limited to the day-to-day; I've operated in the high-stakes environments that define great drama:• Tactical Operations: Assisted NTRG (National Tactical Response Group), Tornado (advanced riot control), and Method of Entry.• Specialist Roles: A qualified Hostage Negotiator, Control & Restraint (C&R) Instructor including SPEAR, Rigid Bar Handcuffs and PAVA. Tornado Unit Commander.• The Full Cycle: From the chaos of Reception and the scrutiny of Drug Testing to the emotional tension of the Visits Hall and high-risk logistics of External Escorts.
I have dealt with individuals at their most vulnerable and their most dangerous. I've seen the psychological toll of the environment on hundreds of men and staff. I've felt the stress, the pressure and the fear.
Authenticity by Experience
As a writer, I know that a fact shouldn't get in the way of a good story - but a technical blunder can kill your audience's immersion instantly. You need the grit of the wing and the heat of the fireground, translated into a language that serves your structure.

Two Frontlines. One Perspective
For the last 6 years, I have served as a Firefighter. This transition added a new dimension to my expertise: the mechanical chaos of a Road Traffic Collision (RTC), the sensory overload of a search in a fire, and the split-second decision-making required when lives are on the line.Wharton Frontline exists because the best stories deserve the truth. I don't just fix your "kit"; I fix the atmosphere, the slang, the movement, and the mindset.
What We Offer
Every story deserves truth. Whether you're writing, directing, or producing, I help you build worlds that feel lived in, not imagined.

Reality Check
A one-hour consultancy - in person or via Zoom/Teams - designed to capture the feel of your world before it's written. We'll lock in the atmosphere, sensory detail, and psychology that research alone can't reach. From the smell of a prison wing to the heat of a house fire, and the rhythm of a command, we'll build authenticity that hits the page before an audience ever sees it.

Script Authenticity Audit
Stop generic tropes from killing your story's immersion. I don't just find the errors in your script - I fix them.• Script reviewed scene-by-scene
• Procedural inaccuracies identified
• Dialogue / slang checked
• Character behaviour assessed
• Practical alternatives suggested
• Written feedback or follow-up Zoom/Teams call to discussDrawing on 20 years of frontline experience, I provide creative, realistic solutions that bring truth to every scene. Whether it's dialogue, procedure, or psychology, I'll make sure your world stands up to expert scrutiny and feels lived-in, not researched.

Production Advisory
Technical blunders on set can derail realism fast. I provide on-location consultancy to ensure your cast, kit, and choreography look and move with authenticity. From table-top reads and rehearsals to live shoots, I help you maintain procedural accuracy and the grounded truth your story needs from start to finish. At least six months' notice required due to operational shift commitments
Professional Network
Wharton Frontline is backed by a growing professional network spanning the emergency services and frontline professions. While my own expertise covers the Prison Service and Fire & Rescue Service, my knowledge doesn't stop at my own experience. Through ongoing professional development, continued frontline work and trusted contacts across Police, Ambulance and other special services I can verify current practices and draw on expertise where a production requires knowledge outside my direct experience. This means you don't need to find multiple technical advisors for a project. We can act as your single point of contact, identifying the right expertise and helping ensure your production remains authentic across different frontline environments.Whether you need to check a prison procedure, emergency response, police terminology or the interaction between different services, I can help connect your production with people who have actually done the job.

Disclaimer:
Operational procedures vary between prisons, brigades, and regions. My consultancy reflects current best practice and lived frontline experience, but no two institutions run identically. As such, no refunds can be issued because Dave down the pub was a firefighter in 1994 and says different.
